This SBK was a blast to build. Very easy to construct, the FT P-40 was straight forward in design. Looking to mod this build a bit with retracts(adding in the wheel wells on the wings), guns, exhaust stacks. I think it looks better with a clear canopy.
This was my first flite test foam board build and it was truly a blast. I mean it was fun - like looking forward to getting home each nite to work on it fun. After building it I added a paint job, some home printed decals (Flying Tigers theme) and then took it to the field to fly this weekend. I'm a beginner-early intermediate flyer and the damn thing flew great from the start. Awesome, indeed and lots of jealous club members looking on wondering "what in the world." A bit of trim and it was "dream like". I'm moving on to the Corsair next and then might try the P-38. Also, the video instructions were awesome (hint: watch each step completely BEFORE trying it so you know where you're aiming to get). Also a few times I had to email support with a few questions and they responded in less than 24 hours. I'm not sure if this will work in the review, but here's a link to a short 2minute video capturing my experience:
The build on this was amazing, like foam board origami everything just fell into place (it didn’t hurt that I watched the assembly video like 100 times) the videos on this were fun and easy to follow, the design is true to the original and performs flawlessly, I highly recommend any of your kits, so economical and fun to build!
The P40 was my second build, the first being the Simple Cub. Though slightly more complex the build was very easy. The new forming skill will come in handy for later builds. The best part is how it flies! Out of the box with little sub trim it flew perfectly. It almost flies out of your hand on a throw launch. I adjusted my low rates to be 50pct throw and 30 pct expo....plenty of authority.
Tattu 1800 all the way forward.
Build this as soon as you can!
On to the new Corsair.
Plane went together very easily, the only issue I had was that some of the laser cuts went a little bit too deep which cause some of the fold points in the wings and such to come apart. Very easily reinforced with some tape though. Overall this kit saves a ton of time.
Wowy wow wow wow! I requested that they make this, and they did! Flite Test, you truly are amazing. You really do listen to everything that everyone has to say. Thank you.
I'm back in the hobby after 25 years and very much enjoyed building the simple scout first and now the P40. I have not flew the P40 yet but the simple scout flies great. I wish I could have added a photo, it turned out to be a beauty. Good luck to all and don't sweat the small stuff.
I completed the speedbuild kit on the P-40 from flight test and it flew wonderfully with a CG 1/2" behind the leading edge. That didn't make sense to me so I moved it back another inch and almost crashed it being tail heavy. I moved it back to 1/2" and enjoyed many wonderful flights.
I flew it many times with great success but eventually crashed it and built a new one from scratch.
The tiled plans are not the same size as the speedbuild. They are larger. I also modified the wing and tail to be more like nerdnick's wings and tails. The result was a tail heavy bird that doesn't fly quite right. I'm adding a lot of ballast to the nose, inside the chin of the P-40. I'll see how it flys now and report later. I can't seem to get enough weight in the nose to have a CG 1/2" back from the leading edge.
Wish me luck...
Buenas noches!
Very easy to build easy to fly. Landing gear is all right could use improving. Super fun project overall. 5 out of 5 stars for me this was my first build but 3rd plane.
I bought the kit for my 11 yr. old to build on his own. This is our 10th flitetest plane. He built the plane in one day. It went together very easily and looks amazing. He did a great job on cuts and gluing. The nose is perfectly straight. I put on fixed landing gear with a steerable rear wheel. The plane taxis well. More importantly, the plane flies amazingly well. The P-40 has a great look in the sky. We are running the power pack C and a 3 cell, 2200 mAh battery. 6 minute flight keeps battery over 30%. Easier to slow fly compared to Corsair or Mustang. Truly a beautiful plane with great flight characteristics. The P-40 also has one of the best battery hatches out of all our planes.
I recently purchased this plane built it and did the maiden flight on Saturday 5/30/20 . This plane flew just as good if not better then my more expensive foam aircraft . It was a lot of fun to build and with it just being plain finish I am able to paint it my way and not locked into the paint scheme you get from other aircraft kits . I did some slight modifications instead of using the plain cardboard canopy . I traced the one that came with the kit onto a clear piece of plastic from a lid on a old Swiffer container added a pilot really looks good . I will be adding LED lights it is painted Army green with invasion stripes . I fly on a grass field so it is hand launched and landings are very easy . The plane handles great and doing loops and rolls no problem this plane got a work out a lot of fun to fly.I got 10 minutes of flight time out of a 3s 2200 30c battery . The folks I fly with could not believe how well this plane flew . You guys are doing a fantastic job and keep up the good work you are making this hobby affordable to the people again . And look forward to ordering more planes in the future .
I got the DuBro spinner that was recommended for this build and it doesn't fit on the new power pack C shafts.
The metal rods for the landing gear are incredibly difficult to bend.
