About the AstroVette

In 1969, astronauts were living the dream with the opportunity to drive brand new Chevys, including the '69 Corvette, courtesy of former Indy 500 winner Jim Rathmann, for just $1. Apollo 12's crew, all-Navy astronauts, chose matching Riverside Gold Corvette Sport Coupes with personalized plaques on the fenders denoting their roles in the mission: red, white, and blue. Dubbed AstroVettes, these cars boasted a 427 Turbo-Jet V8 engine, four-speed wide-range transmission, and 390 horsepower, complemented by black-painted "wings" reminiscent of the Apollo 12 module's colors, designed by stylist Alex Tremulis. This AFX car represents Lunar Module Pilot Alan Bean's Corvette, who found driving it akin to the thrill of space travel.
