Ares RC Decathlon 350 Airplane RTF
The Ares Decathlon 350 RTF is the ideal airplane for learning to fly RC because it includes the technology that helps teach you how to fly, as well as the capability to make flying fun once you’ve learned. The technology is the innovative Aegis Natural Flight Progression (NFP) system with three different flying modes (Beginner, Intermediate, and Unassisted) that provide the stable assistance you need to learn to fly on your own. The capability comes from a powerful 1400KV brushless motor and 15A BL ESC combo that, when combined with the included 3S 600mAh Lipo battery, provide plenty of power and long flight times.
The NFP technology in the Decathlon is controlled from a three-position switch on the transmitter that allows you to select Beginner, Intermediate, or Unassisted Mode. Beginner Mode limits the bank angle during flight and automatically helps pilots make coordinated turns. Intermediate Mode allows greater bank angles and helps you learn how using the rudder can help with controlling the airplane. In Beginner Mode or Intermediate Mode, all you have to do if you feel you’ve lost control is let go of the sticks and the airplane quickly returns to level flight. When you are ready to fly in Unassisted Mode, the technology is still there to “rescue” you if the airplane gets into trouble. Just flip the NFP control switch to Beginner or Intermediate Mode and you’re back in level flight!
Another feature of the Aegis NFP system in the Decathlon 350 is the revolutionary “Tail-Lock” technology. This feature is available in both Beginner and Intermediate Modes and provides the benefit of automatically making coordinated flight turns look easy, even in rough air. Plus, with the NFP system on, takeoffs and landings automatically become straight, smooth and stress-free - even on rough, bumpy runways.
The Decathlon 350 has an attractive scale trim scheme and comes complete with everything needed to fly. In addition to the Decathlon 350 airframe, you get a 2.4GHz standard size 6-channel transmitter, a powerful LiPo battery, an AC charger, and even the AA batteries needed to power up the transmitter. A Ready-for-Receiver (without transmitter, receiver, battery, and charger) version that works with some other best-selling radio systems and includes the Aegis NFP control board is also available. Setup of the plane is straight forward, though I did have to use some CA on the rudder as the screw mounts were loose.
Plane comes with a parts bag of extras and is labeled as such,which I thoight was generous considering the low cost of a complete sysyem.
Reading other reviews, I get the impression that some just jumped right in expecting performance of a plane 20 times the cost. Setting up the NFP was stupid easy, and static trim was just as easy. And you can tell it will work as described, just handling the fuse in mock moves. Rolls get aileron movements, excess Yaw moves the rudder (FAST!) and pitch moves the elevator. Sampling the movements of control surfaces between each setting shows a mild decrease of movement from un-altered to the beginner mode.
Yes, she is fast. With the wingloading, she has to be. Is that a problem? Yes and no. It depends on you and how twitchy your commands are. Hammer the elevators on landing and you will mess something up, promise. I would like to see a 450 version with another 8inches of wingspan, and i would bet she would be a heck of a STOL.)
After several landings resulting in torn off gear I got creative and built struts to support gear out of a 8.5" piece of coat hanger wire bent into a v and epoxied to the gear at base of wheels. I bent the V end down 1/2" and made a slit in the fuse, inserted the v and epoxied in place. No effect to flight. Can now land with wheels still attached. Now to find a better prop.)
Plane is a fast flier. Don't try to go slow...it will tip stall. Slow landing approaches usually end up tip stalling nose first into the ground, before you can get it to the runway. If you power in to keep the speed up, you'll rip off the gear, because it is so weak.
There are way better planes out there for the same money. Avoid this one. Mine is now a parts donor.)
