Yeah Racing Aluminum Servo Saver (Blue)
I bought this item for a second-hand RWD-converted TT-02 drift chassis that had an aluminum direct servo horn. The original horn likely would’ve been fine if not for the fact that the direct horn was responsible for destroying my previous servo.
So to prevent that from happening again, I purchased this Yeah Racing servo saver unit. I really enjoyed the Tamiya unit in my other TT-02 so because this RWD chassis is almost exclusively Yeah Racing, why not right?
The product is great and you shouldn’t hesitate to get one. It’s a really BEAUTIFUL unit and features a ball bearing, something that’s different than the Tamiya unit I have on my other chassis. The only issue you’ll have is getting the springs onto the horn. On the Tamiya horn, the spring tension isn’t so bad to hurt your fingers. Unfortunately, the Yeah Racing unit uses much thicker and higher tension springs.
So how do you get them on anyway? Unfortunately, you’ll need to either purchase or borrow a “lock ring plier” from your local auto parts store. The tool then spreads the opening enough to slide the rings onto the horn. So basically your $20 servo saver becomes your new $40 servo saver because of the springs. While you could just run TWO springs on the horn (the S and L springs), it’s highly recommended to use three and in my opinion, spending money on a special tool to use to install this servo horn is worth the investment, especially when you have a $100 Savox unit and don’t want to risk destroying it after one run!
All in all, it’s a great investment. Unfortunately, you may have to spend a little more JUST to get everything assembled but it’s a small price to pay to ensure your servo doesn’t get destroyed. The issue with the spring is the only reason I took a star off but understand that this IS a high quality, 5-star item otherwise.
*UPDATE 9/24/22: So I’ve used this for about a year since my initial review and sadly, the servo saver no longer centers perfectly. It may be because the “notch” on saver has gotten worn during use or the springs have weakened. I couldn’t really say what is now causing my erratic steering return issues but the problem is with the saver itself. The saver is still great as it does exactly that: save your servo from damage. However, like any other servo saver… you’ll need to replace them once it no longer centers the steering. It may just be time to replace it once again but I’m a bit bummed that it hasn’t lasted as long as I anticipated it would and given the difficulty I had installing it the first time, I doubt I will purchase this one again.
