Shaft Driven Premium Edition Re-Released Vintage Buggy Kit

Prepare to relive the glory days with this updated and re-released version of the stunning, limited edition Tamiya 2018 Manta Ray. The Manta Ray made a name for itself when it was originally released in 1990 for being both a beginner-level off-road buggy and an easily upgradeable car for veteran radio control hobbyists. The Manta Ray also gained popularity for being the first Tamiya car to use the DF-01 chassis that inspired the iconic TA-01 and TA-02 chassis.

About the 2018 Manta Ray Off-Road Buggy Kit

Chassis

The DF (Dirt - Four Wheel Drive) chassis was first introduced with the original release of the Manta Ray in 1990. This masterfully designed DF-01 chassis is a sleek bathtub chassis that has a large span in use, from the vintage Manta Ray to the highly developed Top Force Evo. Needless to say, this chassis is extremely versatile and has radio components such as the battery that are mounted in the center of the honeycomb frame for optimum balance. This chassis would later become the forefather of the Tamiya TA series chassis platforms.

Suspension & Drivetrain

The Manta Ray's bathtub chassis is paired with a four-wheel double wishbone suspension. Double wishbone suspension allows each wheel to act and react independently from the others, offering unmatched traction on uneven terrain. This car is also equipped with CVA oil dampers for stable running in off-road conditions. Featuring a shaft-driven 4WD drivetrain that has front and rear sealed gearboxes with internal differential gear units for smooth cornering, and a gearbox that has a quick access hatch for convenient and hassle-free maintenance.

Body

The body included in this kit is clear, unpainted, and uncut, which allows for some personalized touches during the painting process. The body is inspired by the sleek and curved shape of Manta Rays and is made from lightweight durable polycarbonate. The large rear wing provides the downforce to keep this buggy low to the ground for superior handling. The decal sheet mimics the original, allowing you to add the final touches with a vintage, retro look that is sure to turn heads.

Tamiya 2018 Manta Ray 1/10 4WD Limited Edition Off-Road Buggy Kit
This Manta Ray kit from Tamiya kind of flies under the radar of many RC buggy fans. Maybe because it’s caught between the entry level kits like the Grasshopper, Grasshopper II, Hornet type kits and the more advanced/higher end kits from Tamiya? Who knows? But it’s a great kit to build, easy for the beginner, and there are loads of hop ups/aftermarket goodies to add to the kit to really make it stand out and perform better. The body looks amazing! Personally, it reminds me of a super car prototype. I happen to love the side intakes and how the body angles upwards towards the rear fin. It really is a nice looking buggy and one that will turn heads as you don’t see very many being built. I’ve added a metal motor mount, aluminum drive shaft, alloy shock towers, bearings, and a driver figure from the spares box (I masked off the canopy to keep it clear so I could use the driver figure). I’m thinking of perhaps changing to some new more aggressive wheels. But make no mistake, you could build it straight out of the box and still have a great buggy. Anyway, highly recommended!
