Spektrum RC DX5C 5-Channel DSMR Surface Radio (Transmitter Only)

Its a very versatile radio. With many programming features. Confortable grip, and easy to reach controls and switches. Could have been the perfect radio....but....It makes me almost angry that spektrum decided to cut costs (about 2 dollars) by not having backlight on the screen. Near hit.

Ill use the radio...great features but Ill be having to hack it and install my own “el panel” backlight.

This was an upgrade from an RTR transmitter. I wanted features like exponential but I didn't want to spend a lot of money. I'm using it with an SRS6000 receiver in a 1/8 scale ebuggy. I've had it for several months and I've used it many times. So far, everything has worked great - no complaints! I've dropped it a couple of times, banged it into the driver's stand at least twice and have used it in the rain - it still works just fine. No problems with range and the menu system wasn't very difficult to figure out. I've bound it to four different receivers and I don't have any problems switching between them and loading profiles. The only complaint I have is that the decals they put on it have a "cheap" look about them but as far as performance goes, I haven't had any issues.

With all the chaos that can occur during days at an offroad track, I think the most logical approach as far as radio selection goes is to use one that you don't care if it gets dirty/scratched/dropped/etc. For the $99 price I paid in April 2020 (roughly 1.5 years ago), this has been a good radio. I throw mine in a plastic bin with my buggies and tools -- no foam padded case treatment here. No issues with range, response, or durability. My power button became a bit sticky, but it was easy to remove the screws to get to the button mechanism and add a little grease to its tracks, which completely sorted that. The lack of a backlight hasn't been a problem, and I do drive a lot at night, but since my track has lights, I can see my radio's screen just fine.

Spektrum does not have any upgrades/provisions to run lithium batteries in this radio. I used AA batteries for 6 months just in case I had to rely on the warranty. After it proved sufficiently durable, I removed the AA battery tray (2 screws), soldered on a female servo connector, and Dremel'd out the plastic protrusions in the battery compartment to allow a Turnigy 2100mAh LiFe 2S battery ($22 shipped) to fit. This was very easy and made this radio functionally every bit as good as the $600 radios, which I have driven many times.

Menus are easy with the scroll wheel. My buddy bought one recently and called me because he couldn't get it to bind -- turns out the problem was he didn't realize the scroll wheel can be pushed in like a button to select items on the menu. There's so many settings available -- far more than 99% of people will ever need or use. I essentially just set end points. Having more than 2 channels is nice because I set the thumb button to marshal my car when I use the radio to play VRC Pro, which is more convenient than having to hit the spacebar on the keyboard.

9/10 would buy again.

Spektrum quality has definitely gone down hill. It works fine and setting it up was fine but the appearance and feel is another story. My flysky has basically the same options, better feel and nicer screen for way less.

Best transmitter i own to date very easy to use and more features and op th ions than ill ever need will be buying another spektrum in the future great product at a great price i have another brand transmitter in this price range not nearly as well made harder to operate and a small fraction of features/options

Out of the box it’s easy to use and connect , for the price that it is it’s a solid race radio

Works great way better than stock transmitter. Also very easy to use i have only been in the hobby for 4 or 5 months and I had no issues using it.

This is an excellent radio. I have two now. Bought one in 2018 and just bought another. I will use one with Rock crawlers and trucks and the other one with buggies. The only thing I wish was that had more model memory. I bought the second one as I almost filled up the first one. May need to get a more racy style spektrum for my race vehicles. The the 5 channels work great with crawlers with a 2 speed, dig and to turn lights on and off.

Great product. Feels good in my hand. way better then RTR stuff. Lots of options and adjustments.

This is a solid transmitter. It has all the features I need and is easy to program/ navigate. I had the dx5c Rugged and ended up selling it to get this because I hated the touch navigation.

If I had one complaint it would be that it doesn't have an easy way to connect a neck strap like the Rugged. Other than that I really like it.

The power button sticks. The view screen shows everything in Grey scale and now when I pull the trigger it chirps. Steering works but that's it. Very disappointed with this. Have had it 8 months and now it is useless.

Item as described was easy to bind to my car. Very tunable for every track I race at.

A much better manual would earn this a fifth star. I spent hours working through multiple mysteries in my quest to upgrade my RTR Capra. Who knew that just LOOKING AT the AVC menu automatically reassigned AUX1 and AUX2? I learned a lot in the process, and that is all part of the fun I guess. And when I was stymied trying to figure out throttle travel, Spektrum customer service replied to my email in less than an hour and solved the issue.
Now that everything is sorted I'm loving this radio. Proportional/selectable 4WS is awesome! Dig works. The radio controls, once learned, are simple to operate. It's a huge step up in capability from the DX3 that came with the truck. Great radio for the price.

Awesome radio. I have bought two one for the wife and one for me best bang for the buck
