SH Engines PT2017-XGB Pro Off Road .21 Competition Buggy Engine
I have a lot of experience with nitro motors. I’ve raced several of the very high dollar motors. I decided to try this economy motor on the advice from a friend. So far I have not been disappointed. The motor makes a lot of power and the delivery is very smooth. You can really feel the rpm range. I was also impressed with the machining and pro race level goodies inside that don’t come with most budget motors or motors $100 more expensive than this one. That and the included set of 4 carb restrictors and additional head shim was nice to have included in the package. All and all the motor is very impressive out of the box and also makes a lot of usable power that rivals some of the 4-$500 motors I’ve run.
A couple things to look out for though. Do not lean this motor too fast. The instructions say to run 4 tanks of fuel at rich setting and then race tune it. I did not find this to be the case. The motor has an incredible amount of pinch at TDC. I would count on running a gallon through it before it loosens up. I had an EBIS break in done on it and still had to run a half gallon through it to loosen up the pinch for a race tune. Also, mounting was a bit of a challenge. The motor mount holes are machined out a bit wider than most motors. It allows for some wiggle room. It takes a little finesse to make sure your motor is mounted perfectly straight to the chassis and gear mesh is correct.
I also purchased the SH 2060 exhaust system for it. It is a great match for the motor. I highly recommend it. `However, the header was not bent at the right angle from the factory and the pipe hung out over my mud guards quit a bit. I had to gently hammer it to the right angle with a rubber mallet. Once that was done it fit perfectly.
From what I understand the 2016 model, 2017 model, and the newer Photon model are all the same motors with differs head color and graphics.
If you’re tired of paying a lot of money on pro motors I would recommend trying this motor. For under $300 for the whole set up you will have the power to be a contender at any club or regional race with buggy or truggy.
