REDS 521 Sport .21 Off-Road Competition Buggy Engine Combo
I bought this as an upgrade for my TLR buggy rocking the 5R5 engine combo I bought almost a year ago. Comparing it to a Reds 721 SV it looks and feels almost identical. The engine has a tight pinch, even after Adam Drake's EBIS it was still a little tight and wore a small groove in my starter box wheel. Engine sounds impressive, feels like more torque compared to the 5R5, plus the carb slide is sealed, looks like the 721 SV I have in my TLR Truggy. Using 25% Torco with a splash of klotz for good measure. I like to keep things lubed up when my engines are singing to the angels!

REDS 521 Sport .21 Off-Road Competition Buggy Engine Combo
I saw the last review and agree, this motor is super tight but settles down nicely after a gallon and a half. reminded me of breaking in an alpha. Ive run three gallons of bones 25/10. At first I didn't like the new carb, but im getting the swing of it and it does drop right straight down to idle when tuned proper. It drives great, mines in a truggy, its a bottom end motor with a ton of punch, with less of a top end. I took it apart after each gallon and everything looks great, typical Reds quality.

So far I've only gotten a half gallon through this engine but I can say it's running really well. The only downside I can say for the whole engine is the pinch is really tight. So tight that from the first time I started the motor, even after getting to 200 before starting, that I have worn a decent grove in the starter box wheel. Also keep a tool handy to get it out of TDC when it gets stuck because it will. After a gallon I will update this post.

REDS 521 Sport .21 Off-Road Competition Buggy Engine Combo
I made this 521 idle for over 5 minutes on its 1st ever start up and posted it on YouTube: Flawless. For the people saying its hard to tune please stay away from drugs. The Reds 521 is Very easy to tune & holds it well. Does not flame out! Run time is long. Im getting 11-12 minutes a tank. Temperature is great! Even after constant WOT it stays below 205°F Great for small technical tracks! Build and parts quality are astonishing.

Cons: Not a speed demon (even tuned lean).

Oh 1 more: Mario Rossi(Novarossi) answered any questions I had regarding tuning tips via email by the next day. A big win for Reds Racing.

REDS 521 Sport .21 Off-Road Competition Buggy Engine Combo
Great engine for the money, bought this engine around a year ago and have over three gallons through it so far and it's still going strong and getting right at 11 minutes when properly tuned. Two notes on this engine though, Note one is it comes really tight out of the box and even when heated (over 212 deg), is difficult to get started for the first couple of times so I recommend a bench break-in over breaking it in in your chassis if possible, your starter box will thank you! Other than that, it break's in rather easily and after a gallon of fuel, it settles down and is easy to needle. The other note is, this engine is a Bottom end engine with tones of punch and suffers on large tracks with long straights so this engine is best suited for small to medium, technical layouts where its extra punch can be taken advantage of. Not saying it can't compete on large tracks, it just means that you will have to gear/pipe it accordingly. In closing, this engine is an awesome choice for those just getting into nitro or those looking for a nice high quality torque based engine at a nice price!
Good Job!! (DaveF)

I didn’t purchase this engine from amain but so far I’m on 3rd tank. Its been great had it for 6 months or more just sitting on shelf finally installed it on my tlr buggy i just had to tweak the idle and low speed needle seems like it’s going to a great motor.
