I did take apart the front diff and it was not filled properly, so now I have to check all 3 diffs, not a big deal though as not a screw was stripped out, or anything loose. I did need to put thread lock on everything, the stuff they use is too soft and will not hold up under race conditions, but for a pre built buggy it was the best I've seen yet, the outdrives were greased during assembly, big plus, that means I can just open them up and add oil, not tear the whole darn thing apart nice addition Mugen.
Oh yeah the shocks were perfectly built too.
The ring gears need grease, they were bone dry when I went to shim the gears. I put one on each side of the diff on the front, and one on the gear side in the rear. Most likely because everyone like their own special grease, just remember to take the diffs out to grease them and shim them properly. The only aftermarket part I thought the buggy needed was better diff o-rings, after trying several futile attempts, I found Tony's O-rings and they fit perfectly. No leaks, not an issue anymore.
Go ahead and use longer screws on the bottom of the radio box, not under the servos, but going into the radio box, and also on the fuel tank mounts where they mount to the chassis, those screws are begging to strip so add 3mm to the length and forgetaboutit....
The front shocks could use the optional black pistons to keep the front off the ground, and keep 45wt oil in them or 40wt, and add the 9.5 t springs because the stock front springs are a bit too soft.
The rear shocks are perfect....The best I've seen in any buggy. Plush travel, and lots of it.....
I never thought I'd see the day I could get a Mugen that's built in the box and with actual race tires in the box premounted.
It truly is the glory days of 1/8th scale buggy racing. I felt spoiled opening the box and realizing OMG I don't have to thread those turnbuckles and trim flashing, the screws already cut the threads, the bearings are the best sealed bearings I've ever seen, The cvd Pins wear really slowly, and the outdrives are long lasting too.
The materials are great, and the on track performance is great if you learn how to tune it just a bit to get it dialed. The M-Spec setup is great for learning the car, and how to drive it. After that you can tighten up the low speed steering and it will deliver the goods in the A-Main...
My most favorite thing about the Mugen is it just flies over jumps and tough sections of the track when timing is needed to make a jump, it does it.... It lands without issue thanks to the perfect shocks, plush travel, and years of Mugen evolution on suspension geometry...I've pulled wheelies in battle, landed huge jumps in the flat, and cut the turns as sharp as I like. I've given this buggy the last half of 2010, and it runs hard, rarely needs adjustment, and can go several races before it needs to be rebuilt, However, realize it does need to be cleaned eventually, so take the time to tear the whole car down after 10 full race days......and replace bearings and so on...
And don't be afraid to make some changes in the car. The M-Spec setup is good, but you can make it faster over time....try a 14t clutchbell on a bigger track, this buggy loves Horsepower. It somehow keeps up with a fast engine....It feels planted on the track, and will allow fast drivers to push it harder, or keep the beginner on all 4 wheels....With the great high speed steering, you can increase the low speeed steering and have all the steering you need while keeping the back of the car in line, a rare quality in a car I must say....
Get er freakin Done Mugen.......
Make sure to buy a set of the proteck/tony screws diff o rings! This will insure your diffs stay nice and full and not mention just keeps your car cleaner around the out drives.
Only other thing i can think of is that if you want the latest option parts (5mm longer chassis, all the new springs) you are looking at about another 160 dollars. I only mention these because i would say the majority of racers are currently running them! You also have the option of just buying the springs you want, i just felt that is was better to buy the whole set.
I HOPE FOR A RESOLUTION ON THIS.
