Maclan 40mm Aluminum Hurricane Series HV Motor Fan
I purchased one of these Maclan 40mm fans to mount near the motor on my TLR 8ight-XTE that I had just recently finished building. I’ve had several of the smaller 30mm aluminum Maclan fans as well as a bunch of the Protek 30mm aluminum fans on many of my other vehicles and I’ve still never had any aluminum cased 30mm fan fail in any of my rc vehicles. This was the first 40mm fan, and after the first 15 minute run with it on my truck I was surprised to find the aluminum housing for the fan was still mounted tight to the chassis, but the entire center fan part that rotates, including the motor was gone. I did have a couple of fairly heavy hits upside down during a couple crashes, but nothing that was bad enough to make me think I would break anything. Basically the 40mm fan is far more fragile during crashes because the spinning fan structure is so much heavier than on the smaller version that sudden impacts can cause it to break away from the mount as the only thing that really holds them on is the strength of the magnets in the motors. I’ll stick with 30mm fans for my big off road rigs I guess…
