The Hobbywing Xerun XR8 SCT Brushless ESC and 3660SD G2 Motor Combo is a great choice for short course trucks, monster trucks, and other heavy duty 2S LiPo applications.

The XR8 SCT is the first 1/8 scale competition ESC which can work the full-sensored mode at all times when paired with a Hobbywing matching motor. Perfect for 1/10 4WD Short Course Truck, Monster Trucks and of course 1/8th scale, the XR8 SCT ESC boasts full sensored operation, 140A output, electronic switch, 6V/7.4V switchable BEC and wireless programming capabilities.

The Hobbywing XERUN SCT 3660SD G2 Sensored 4300kV Brushless Motor is a 4-pole power house, great for heavy-duty short course, truck and monster truck sensored applications. Because this motor uses a 5mm diameter motor shaft, it requires pinion gears with a 5mm bore.

Features:

  • ESC
    • Turbo Timing Technology: Turbo timing technology is implemented by the XR8 SCT to unleash the maximum power of a HOBBYWING matching motor.
    • Small & Light Structure Design: Small (30.1% smaller than XR8 Plus in size) and light (36.5g lighter than XR8 Plus in weight) structure design greatly simplifies the installation of the power system (esp. for vehicles like buggy and touring car with compact chassis).
    • Programming / Upgrading / Data reading wirelessly: With Hobbywing's "WiFi Express" module and iPhone or an Android phone (with the HOBBYWING WiFi Link software installed), the user can remotely program parameters, upgrade firmware and check relevant data of the ESC without leaving the control stand.
*WiFi Module not included and sold separately: part# HWA30503000
    • Coasting: The XR8 SCT provides an exceptionally smooth off-throttle coasting function, which simulates the feeling of inertia and momentum of a large-scale car driving experience. This can greatly improve the performance of builds utilizing large, high-powered motors as electromagnetic drag becomes a substantial factor in sudden deceleration when in the off-throttle position, adversely affecting driving performance and overall maneuvering.
    • Capacitor Thermal Protection: Capacitor thermal protection implemented by the XR8 SCT will effectively prevent capacitors from exploding and causing irreversible damage to the ESC due to overload.
    • High Voltage Built-in BEC: High voltage built-in BEC with an output current of up to 15 Amp and a switchable output voltage of 6V-7.4V allows users to use various high torque and high voltage servos.
    • High Reliability & Durability: Built with the most rugged and high-quality components and coupled with cutting-edge firmware, the XR8 SCT is able to deliver unmatched power and performance for even the most hardcore of racing applications, but is also responsive enough to protect itself from damage due to overloading due to physical abuse, overuse or even human error.
    • Advanced and Secure Electronic Switch: Electronic switch with a lifespan of over 50000 on/off cycles, housed in a completely waterproof, dust-proof and shock-resistant design.
    • Ultra-Reliable Cooling System: HOBBYWING's patented cooling technology utilizes proprietary heat-conductive copper bars to rapidly and effectively transfer all internal heat from the MOSFET board to the integrated CNC machined billet aluminum heatsink housing. The cooling fan adopts a shockproof mounting which effectively reduces the possibility of fan damage due to vehicle’s frequent jumps.
    • Wide applicability: This XR8 SCT ESC is not only applicable to 1/8th buggies and short-course trucks but also 1/10th short-course trucks, trucks and monster trucks.
  • Motor
    • Innovative 4-pole-8-magnet "staggered pole" rotor (Hobbywing-patented) with low cogging effect and torque pulsation greatly improves control feel around corners.
    • Built-in chip for making the motor be easily identified by HOBBYWING ESCs. When pairing it with a HW 1/8th sensored ESC (i.e. XR8 SCT/Plus), the motor can work in the “sensored” mode at all times with gr eat output linearity after the identification. The Turbo timing is allowed to be activated for higher output.
    • Magnetic ring mounted on the rotor protects the motor from signal interference and guarantees its super stability in the “sensor ed” mode.
    • With the mechanical timing adjustable from 20 degrees to 40 degrees, users are able to have different output power.
    • Turbine design implemented by the rotor accelerates the internal air circulation and reduces heat.
    • Rebuild-able design (partially rebuild-able) and screw-less motor case for easy routine maintenance effectively prolong the motor life and raise the motor effficiency.
    • CNC machined aluminum housing, high purity copper windings, advanced rotor structure, high-quality alloy steel output shaft, high-precision bearings for high durability and smoothness.
    • Updated “U” solder tabs at the bottom of the motor for easy soldering and wiring.

Hobbywing Xerun XR8 SCT Brushless ESC/3660SD G2 Motor Combo (4300kV)
Nice sensored combo! Here's a pro/con list that I came up with based on my experience:

Pros:

- Very smooth coasting

- Very quiet motor, even on the highest speed

- Has enough torque for 4wd SCTs (I am using it in a Slash 4x4 with 13/54 gearing, VXL diffs)

- Motor is very fast, makes the stock Traxxas tires balloon at roughly 60% throttle

- ESC is fairly quiet to most people (high pitch sound, so maybe not great for dogs?)

- Low motor resistance (similar to Castle's 10th scale motors, maybe even better)

- Strong fan on ESC that really pushes air (much better than the one on Castle's SW4)

- Comes with all wires, heat-shrink, double-sided tape (securing ESC and on/off button), 48p pinion gear, extra ESC fan (replacement part), and everything needed (except for solder) to set it up.

- Runs fairly cool on 13/54 gearing on Slash 4x4 (not as cool compared to CC 3800kv on 16/90 gearing on Slash 2wd, but I think the CC would do fairly similar if on the Slash 4x4 since 13/54 is still a higher ratio than 16/90 and the Slash 4x4 is much heavier)

- Great adjustability (with LCD program box)

Cons:

- Does not come with any type of programming box, which is required if you want to change the settings of the ESC. I wouldn't really mind if they raised the price and added the LCD program box to go along with it.

- Factory settings it came with are not practical. It comes set without reverse, which is kind of a pain for non-racers driving in tight areas (basically forces people to buy the program box if they want to reverse). It seems like it is intended to be set for racers (reverse is not allowed in racing for various reasons), however, most racers will reprogram other things anyways (to their own "successful" settings), so it would have been nice for it to have been set with reverse from the factory.

- Motor tabs can a bit of a challenge to solder, especially for beginners. (I am using a Weller's 60W Iron). Would have been nicer if the motor wires came pre-soldered.

- Jerks a bit on initial really low-speed startups (normally not noticeable), but I think that can be adjusted by the "punch" levels.

- Isn't really a con (nitpicking at this point), but the motor (4300kv) can only take 2s LiPos max (3600kv can take 3s) when the ESC is able to take 4s.

Overall, this is a great combo to get for both racers and bashers. I installed this in my Slash 4x4 with 13/54 gearing, and it has been performing very well. No issues yet. Amain also did an amazing job on the shipping (nice and fast)! Hopefully, this helps if anyone is undecided! (If it did please give this review a thumbs up, as it will encourage me more to give even more detailed reviews)

Hobbywing Xerun XR8 SCT Brushless ESC/3660SD G2 Motor Combo (4300kV)
I purchased two of these combos. One for my SCTE 2.0 and one for my buddies SC10.
The good: They are very smooth and rip just as fast as the equivalent Tekin system costing twice as much.

The bad: The case split in two on both of our motors. Mine with about 100 packs run through it, and my friends with only about 10 packs run through it. These cans are two pieces From the factory that are pressed onto the stator.

This G2 can is nowhere near as well built as Hobbywings previous design 3656 which was built proof. I suggest avoiding this product.

Hobbywing Xerun XR8 SCT Brushless ESC/3660SD G2 Motor Combo (4300kV)
Not happy at all, worked for 10 minutes and brought back in to cool and replace battery before races, would not restart with rapidly and randomly flashing on ESC. Had multiple experienced people work on it at the track and said it was hooked up correctly but ESC didn't make any sounds and you couldn't enter manual programming.
Since Amain Hobbies does not except HW returns you must contact HW.
Dealing with HW support is extremely Insulting as every email is about user error and not there product!
I was upgrading from a HW 3660 EZRUN and had no problems setting up that one.
GOOD LUCK IF YOU HAVE TO DEAL WITH HW SUPPORT AS THEY WILL PISS YOU OFF!

PS. 8 emails later I am still performing tests that are not working.

Hobbywing Xerun XR8 SCT Brushless ESC/3660SD G2 Motor Combo (4300kV)
I put this in a sct410 and have had zero problems. I run 14t and have never had a temp issue. The power is great, and has a good mix of torque for corner exit and top speed for long straights.

Hobbywing Xerun XR8 SCT Brushless ESC/3660SD G2 Motor Combo (4300kV)
I'm using this in a 2wd drag slash. The power is very good, especially considering Hobbywing rotors are notorious for being on the small side and it's only on 2s. Decent adjustability. Versatile, the esc seems well built. Turbo and boost options are available. No data logging though. The motor is strong but some have said the two piece can will separate under a hard impact or if overheated. That's not a deal breaker for me because I plan on replacing the motor with something better down the line. Overall it's a great setup for the money. 4 star only because it lacks a few adjustment options I really wanted that castle offers for close to the same price in the mamba x combos...that are constantly on backorder.

Hobbywing Xerun XR8 SCT Brushless ESC/3660SD G2 Motor Combo (4300kV)
ESC and motor is very fast and smooth and programming is very easy with programming box but I had a hard landing and my motor case was in two pieces. It was designed this was and split again and again until it was damages and not usable anymore. This system would get 5 stars if motor can was one piece.

Hobbywing Xerun XR8 SCT Brushless ESC/3660SD G2 Motor Combo (4300kV)
Motor/ESC bad out of the box. The process to claim the warranty is ridiculous. Numerous emails back and forth for days. Only for them to tell you a new one can be purchased for a discount or more troubleshooting which requires pictures, more emails, phone calls. Or send it to the factory to undergo testing so they can blame it on you.
