History:

  • Santa Barbara was founded as the 10th mission on December 4, 1786, by Father Fermin de Lasuen. Best known for unique architecture, it featured twin bell towers and an ornate Roman temple façade built by the Chumash Indians.
  • By 1807 nearly 1700 converts lived at the mission. The padres taught them to build an elaborate water system so extraordinary that parts are still used by the city of Santa Barbara.
  • The first church was completed in 1789. A second, built five years later, was destroyed by an earthquake in 1812. A third was constructed which is the church recognized today.
  • Despite secularization, Santa Barbara was never allowed to lapse into decay. It has remained in constant use by the Franciscans since the founding day
