The Flite Test X-29 is a replica of the full scale model originally developed by Grumman in the 1980s as an experimental aircraft to test new design technologies such as using forward-swept wings, canard control surfaces and carbon fiber composite materials. The team at Flite Test have simplified the some aspects of the plane to allow it to be constructed out of foam board and common materials while still retaining the sharp looks of the design. The aircraft’s unique flying characteristics such as its gentle stall have also been retained, but the inherent instability of the full-scale aircraft has been improved in our foam version.

It's relatively short, air foiled wing and long fuselage keeps the plane tracking straight in fast passes and allows it to slide into sharp turns while still having the locked-in feel. The speed and agility as well as its slightly more complex build means that it is a good fit for intermediate pilots and builders.

This was a great plane to scratch build. This was probably my 10th FT plane that I have scratch built. It was very satisfying to see everything fit together nicely. Assembling the front section that the nose piece goes over is a tough one, and I was pushing so hard to get it in place that I bent the plane in half. Steady pressure indeed. I fixed that error, and got it all assembled as an EDF. As an assembled model, it looks great. I got a lot of compliments on how cool it looked, and a lot of questions about it.

As for the maiden flight, I tossed it hard, it flew straight, but as I found out after 2 subsequent maidens, the thrust tube for the 70mm EDF necks down too small at the end. I was concerned about it when I put it together, but thought not to question the original design. Perhaps that was on me, but comparing it to the Viggen that flies great with the same motor (2300kv 6S), I had not nearly enough thrust, and the jet just couldn't stay airborn. Sadly with these flite test EDF planes, in order to take out the EDF or modify the thrust tube, you have to nearly destroy the jet to get to them. I will build this again in the future and make sure the thrust tube is larger at the end. I learned a lot from the first build, so i think the second will go smoother with some custom mods!

This is a fun build and turns out to be a very foxy looking model. I cloned one from the kit and built it as the pusher prop model. I tried the maiden flight on a day with about 8 MPH wind - I used about 3/4ths throttle and mine went out about 8 feet and torque rolled it over and it went into the ground and was destroyed. Apparently with this short wingspan even at 3/4ths throttle the torque is so strong it just rolls over as soon as it leaves your hand. 8-( I am going to build another one this winter from the kit and this time will build it as an EDF so torque at launch should not roll it over and stuff it into the ground immediately upon launch.
