Flite Test welcomes a real flying version of an iconic aircraft from an aviation themed cartoon called Tale Spin to the FLITE TEST FAMILY... The FT SEA DUCK!! One of the goals behind making this plane was to celebrate other community members who have designed similar versions of the SeaDuck. We also wanted to demonstrate the abilities of this cartoon made real along with giving ideas on fun activities you can do to keep the inspiration going long after a cartoon or show has ended. Keeping the DREAM ALIVE!  

This plane is a twin engine,  3 channel airplane.  It is an amazing machine to build and even more fun to FLY!  The FT Sea Duck uses differential thrust capabilities which makes maneuvering on the water a breeze!!  Another awesome thing that this plane brings with it is, even though it is a sea plane, it flys great from a position on land as well for people who do not live near water or where water is not easily accessible!  If you are looking for a FIRST twin engine airplane, you have found it!  As you build this plane you will see that it was designed to fit either the B-twin power pack or the C-twin power pack for versatility(recommended)!  This plane was engineered to allow for people to be creative and go flying with their transmitters as well as their imaginations to build or fly something they maybe thought was iconic in their own aviation upbringing!  We are hoping this plane brings you as much fun as it has brought us over the past few months.

I recently purchased the laser cut kit and power harness but had my own servos and motors. The instructional video is "spot on" and it makes the build easier. It will be to your advantage to watch the video 2-3 times before plugging in the glue gun. I think i've used too much glue so be careful. I wanted to be sure it was sealed very well, but it will add weight. I also used spray foam on the inside of the fuselage to seal any cracks however it also added a little weight. I plan on grass, snow and water flights. I'm not sure the spray foam was a good idea or not .... ask me in three or four months. Roughing up the brown paper for paint is a must or it will be too slick for paint and the paint will want to run. I used Fusion paint. One of the toughest part of the build for me was putting the two sides and bottom together plus the packing tape. If you use too much glue on the outside, using the packing tape to seal becomes uneven and difficult to use. (use two people)

The build is pretty cool. I've built one plane and several flying wings which all can be done in a day or two. Plan on the long haul for this build, especially if you decide to paint along the way like I did. I went by the video instructions which I'd recommend. I can't say enough good things about the laser-cut foam airframe. It's good .. really good. If you're looking for a good build, something different, or a longer winter build this plane is for you.

Flite Test Sea Duck Electric Airplane Kit (1422mm)
This airplane is a blast to fly - very well behaved but agile, and the differential thrust adds capabilities not easily found elsewhere. I have a lot of float planes and only fly off the water - the Sea Duck is a near perfect seaplane. That said, there are a couple of things that should be improved from the stock build.

First, the hull is structurally weak. An inadvertent hard landing on water will crush the bow. When you build yours double up the foamboard up front and/or add cross braces. Or reinforce with spray foam. I also glue a sheet plastic skid plate on the bottom. I may try building another Sea Duck with a shaped solid foam hull, similar to the foam floats I build from Seaplane Supply. I'm not worried about weight, btw - this plane has plenty of power.

In the hull, I built up a slot at the front of the battery compartment that the battery slides into - in the CG balanced position - and a ledge at the rear to keep the battery from sliding backwards. When the velcro strap is secured, the battery cannot slide in any direction. It's the easiest battery mounting system of any of my airplanes. Use a 3300 mAH 3S LiPo.

Second, the water resistant foam board is not waterproof. It will absorb water and delaminate if it isn't fully sealed - surfaces and edges. If you're not flying off the water, no big deal, but this a fantastic water plane. For all the time spent building the Sea Duck, plus the time painting and waterproofing and edge sealing every surface, I wish that I had a waterproof board to build it with. This is a good enough design that I want it to be a permanent build - not your prototypical FliteTest throwaway. I love to fly this airplane and I'd like it to last.

[Follow up 3/2020] I scratch built a second Sea Duck this winter from plans (not the kit) and with a few modifications. I doubled up the sides and bottom of the hull section and added cross bracing as well. I enlarged the battery section to accomodate a 5000mah 4S battery (slides into a cavity with a single velcro strap tie down). Finally, I simplified and enlarged the air vents behind the motor nacelles, with a larger vent hole below. Before painting, I sealed all edges with hot glue. After painting I sealed the entire plane with clear acrylic. The whole thing is much stronger and water resistant now, if not waterproof. With a pair of Rimfire .10 motors and a 4S battery, it'll climb straight up as far as I dare and my 10 minute flights are only using 50% of the 5000mah battery. This second one is built to last awhile and still flies beautifully.

I absolutely love the FT Sea Duck. my biggest plane so far. I was able to follow the video and my plane came out awesome. I've build the Gremlin, it was a lot of fun to build. that's why I chose to try a bigger one. I love these build kits, and everything is easy to see what I am going to need for the build on the website. I plan on doing the Corsair next. in one of the videos I saw what looked like an F14, I will be first one to jump on that if a kit gets available. keep up the great work Flight Test!

I followed the build video and the Sea Duck went together very easily. I then followed the video on how to program my Spektrun radio and receiver for the trust setting on both motors and everything works perfectly. I have yet to fly the Sea Duck but that will happen this week end. I would recommend this model to anyone who wants a twin electric RC Model.

The new power pack doesn't come with the collets that the old one does, and that Josh suggests to use in the build video. I asked customer support to recommend an alternative and the one they recommended doesn't fit the shaft. Pretty disappointed because those make the look of the plane.

don't use a 3S battery. Weigth is not enough to balance the plane. Use a 4S battery instead.
I used carbon fiber to reinforce the wings: I saw many youtube videos where the wings cracked at the motor shafts so I wanted to reinforce that area with carbon fiber bars.

This might my favorite plane I don't (quite) own. I've flown my neighbor's quite a few times (off water and grass), and built one with my dad (haven't maidened it yet though). It's decently aerobatic and has a ton of thrust On the other hand, it's not fast, so despite it's large size you can have a lot of fun with it in a small area. We've gotten 10-15 minute flights on a 3s 2200 mAh, but it could clearly handle a much heavier battery without breaking a sweat.

This is a wonderful plane. I was inspired by the red bull episodes. So I looked up a little bit about the red bull air races and about some of the first air races and was inspired to make a red bull style twin engine ft sea duck. I have built more than 60 foam board airplanes since hearing about flite test 6 years ago. And so far, this has been one of the funniest builds I have done to this date. Great job flite test, you guys crushed it!

This plane brings back everythimg about my childhood. Until its first maiden flight, in which one of the esc's from power pack c die on me mid air and the plane crashed. Power pack c is cheap crap. Do yourself a favor and save yourself the headache of having to fix ypir plane on top of cutting an access hole on the rear hatch to barely access the electronics. Do not buy power pak c
