Introduced as a primary trainer for the U.S. Army Air Corps in the days leading up to WWII, the Stearman PT-17’s robust construction and good-natured flying manners endeared it to thousands of pilots throughout the war years and beyond. Its sheer numbers (over 10,000 built, by some estimates) and numerous post-war roles, from crop duster to air show star, have made it one of the most recognizable biplanes among the general public to this day.

E-flite has expertly re-created the rugged good looks and benign flight behavior of the full-scale Stearman with this easy-to-assemble 15-size model that is a joy to fly. It comes out of the box constructed of balsa and light plywood and covered in an authentic early-WWII UtlraCote® trim scheme. Other scale touches include a painted fiberglass cowl, painted fiberglass landing gear fairings, and a great-looking 9-cylinder dummy radial engine. Assembly is remarkably simple thanks to the plug-in wings and bolt-on interplane struts. E-flite’s even included specially designed jigs that allow you to keep the upper and lower wing halves connected for easier transport and storage.

In the air the Stearman PT-17 15e’s flat-bottom airfoils and light wing loading translate into exceptionally scale-like flight characteristics that everyone from intermediate to advanced pilots will instantly fall in love with.

E-flite Stearman PT-17 15e ARF
I wanted this biplane, the Horrizon video shows it flying slow and stable, after I set mine up having the C.G. correct, the first few flights were scary and after lot's of research I found the wing incidence MUST be checked so they are parallel or the top wing L.E. 1* positive to the bottom, mine with the pre drilled holes turned out 3* positive and was very unstable escpecially in turns and lower speeds. You can change the C.G. in frustration thinking it's the problem and fly a difficult plane thinking it's just the design but correct wings incidence is crucial to stability. I had mine up for sale thinking biplanes aren't for me until I found out about this, corrected it and it flies much better now. E-flite should have an adendum to instructions for checking this incidence and hopefully have done so in newer kits. Also, more rudder before and during turns helps, otherwise the wings tend to keep rolling over escpecially a lower speeds, don't get to slow in turns. With so much lift on 2 wings, pilots have crashed on first flights using to much power on takeoff going straight up, stalling and crashing, a little down elevator and easy on the takeoff power will be much safer. I have 8.25 oz. of lead in the nose. Happy flying...

E-flite Stearman PT-17 15e ARF
Very nice kit, well built and goes together nicely. I used all the recommended extras, motor, prop, servos and ESC. The plane flies great, very scale like. You must remember you are flying a nostalgia style biplane and keep speed up in turns, do not try to float or guide it in, about 1/4 throttle on landing approaches and it settles in nice. Love the flybys, it looks great in the air and has plenty of power with the power 15 installed. As another reviewer stated, it is a very good idea to use an incidence meter on the wings, just to make sure they are set up correctly or this plane may not fly as well as it should. Overall a great kit especially if you want something that looks and flies great and is not made of foam.
