The C&NW purchased 25 GP15-1s in June of 1976. This Genesis release features accurate details for the as-delivered C&NW units, including nose-mounted gong bell, Western-Cullen beacon, and switch broom (so crews can keep the switch points clean). Most lasted in service until 1992, with several coming under Union Pacific ownership and others being sold to leasing companies.

CSX received a large number of GP15-1s from Conrail. The versatile units have been repainted and modified in various ways over the years. Athearn Genesis announces four different CSX road numbers, representing units as they look in service today. The locomotives feature newly tooled prototypical details, such as electronic parking brakes, noses without class lights, & CSX style cab antennas. In addition, each individual road number is decorated to match its prototype.

Conrail ordered 100 GP15-1s in 1979. Intended for secondary and branch line trains, they featured snowplows on both ends for bidirectional use. Signal boxes were also standard equipment, allowing the GP15s to be used for road service when required. Most survived till the end of Conrail, and were split between NS and CSX- frequently while still in their Conrail blue paint.
