This is the Novak Ballistic 4.5T (5000Kv), 550 Size, Brushless "Short Course" Electric Motor. Novak has repeatedly brought original products and technological advancements to the R/C industry, and, to no one’s surprise, Novak is doing it again! Novak Ballistic 550 Brushless Motors are the first 550-sized motors designed specifically for short course competition and will easily outperform traditional 540-sized motors. The Ballistic 550s are more powerful because of their extra long stator and rotor magnet. In fact, the stator and rotor magnet are twice the length of 540-sized motors, which equals twice the torque when compared to the equivalent 540 motor. More torque, means more speed!

Additionally, these larger-sized motors run cooler and more efficiently than their 540 counterparts. These high-powered motors are the top choice at small, indoor race tracks and easily install into OFNA’s Hyper 10 SC, OFNA’s Jammin’ SCRT 10, and the Traxxas’ Slash 4X4 Short Course Trucks, as well as other 1/10-scale short course trucks. In addition to the low-speed driveability and no cogging, the sensor-based Ballistic 550s have been fitted with rugged 5mm output shafts for maximum resilience and race life while offering smooth and controlled power delivery.

Novak Ballistic 550 motors are completely rebuildable and feature interchangeable wound stator construction. A stator swap allows for easier experimentation at the track and cuts down on racing costs. Additionally, all of Novak’s Ballistic 550s feature a replaceable rotor, front end bell, sensor harness, bearings and other replaceable items.

  • Sensor-based for excellent torque and low-speed driveability
  • Oversized front bearing for increased load handling and bearing life
  • Rebuildable design with removable shielded sensor harness, sensor assembly, wound stator, hardware, insulation, bearing cap, bearings and both end bells
  • Nickel-plated, sintered Neodymium rotor with a 5mm pinion shaft that accepts all existing pinion gears
  • Adjustable timing to help retain previous user settings
  • Meets RoHS compliance and includes 120-Day Manufacturers Warranty
  • Designed, hand wound and dyno tested by Novak in Irvine, Calif., using globally sourced components

Novak Ballistic 550 Brushless "Short Course" Motor (4.5T/5000Kv)
Just a crazy comment that the motor doesnt work in the dirt. I'm deployed to Afghanistan and when I have down time my friends and I bash the **** out of our Slash 4x4's. They have the SC4X and I have the Ballistic 4.5. I've never had a motor perform better than this thing. Crazy torque and it's always in the dirt hitting their cars. I don't think there is a worse place than here for dirt and sand so I dont believe it when someone says they got a little dirt in it and it quit working. Novak is the BEST!!!!

Novak Ballistic 550 Brushless "Short Course" Motor (4.5T/5000Kv)
bought this motor for my losi scte and it sucked. i was running it on a rx8 esc and i was getting smoked down the straight. I changed it out with a lrp 5.5 turned and it made that truck come to life. The only thing this motor should be used for is a paper weight.

Novak Ballistic 550 Brushless "Short Course" Motor (4.5T/5000Kv)
Strong motor. At 4.5T be careful with advance timing. I run it on a sand covered track all the time. It does get grit in there but the motor is built for maintenance and disassembles easily. Bearing replacement on the front bell cover is an easy press-out. The small rear bell is difficult as it is a "blind press" and you cannot get anything behind the bearing to get it out. Novak makes a replacement with a new bearing installed for about $9 so that may be the best way. I decided to drill a small hole in the back of the bell so I can press the small bearing out. I cover the new hole with tape to keep out sand from there.

Novak Ballistic 550 Brushless "Short Course" Motor (4.5T/5000Kv)
Bought one of these and the sensor board failed after just a few runs- motor started cogging badly. Removed the sensor harness and it runs fine with my M/MPro ESC set to "SmartSense" sensorless operation. Also dialed back the factory 30 deg. of static timing- motor still kicks butt, but doesn't get nearly as hot. Can't see any performance loss at all with sensorless operation- sooooo I won't be running ANY motors with sensor-only operation. Not to mention no worries about failing sensor assemblies! FYI-- Don't know why Novak is factory setting the static timing on this motor to 30deg advance, because with the gearing in my TEN SCTE 4wd (Mod 1.0 pitch 40t spur & 11-13t pinion) and retarding static timing to 5 deg, the truck still hauls a--. Maybe that's what works with Novak sensored ESC's- don't know because I'm using a MambaMax Pro w/ SmartSense sensorless operation. Losi recommends ANY 4.5T 550 motor and 16T PINION for this truck- NOTTTTT!!! Ran 2 laps with that setup and the Novak motor was cooking over 195 deg. and the truck speed never topped out on the 100ft straightaway!! Guess the Losi Excelorin ESC (also Losi-recommended) handles that gearing by some kind of current limiting/torque control...don't know.

Novak Ballistic 550 Brushless "Short Course" Motor (4.5T/5000Kv)
I had this motor and the Havoc SC Pro esc in a slash 4x4, I raced in the state series last year, flawless! It did not lack any power against any of the others, very smooth throttle feel, ballistic with timing added. I have sold the truck and esc/motor to a buddy for this year, again, flawless thus far. I am getting another for my sc10 4x4, great system!

Novak Ballistic 550 Brushless "Short Course" Motor (4.5T/5000Kv)
This motor should not be marketed as an offroad motor. After one race day both bearings on the motor were shot due to the motor sucking the dirt in. Novak told me to use scotch tape to cover up the unused motor mounting holes, so I did. After the next race I opened up the motor and still large amounts of dirt in the can of the motor. Don't get me wrong, the motor perfoms great but is a total maintenance nightmare. You will be spending alot of money on bearings if you go with this motor.

Novak Ballistic 550 Brushless "Short Course" Motor (4.5T/5000Kv)
I am bummed you had an issue with that motor. I have 1 in a Hyper 10SC and 1 in a Traxxas 4x4 Platinum and both work extremely well with no issues. I had one in my SCRT before selling it to an employee and he has had no issues. Overall its been a great motor. I ran it with an 11.1 in my Traxxas and its incredibly fast. This motor with the Castle Creations 1/10 scale Pro ESC is the perfect combo. You will have better luck with the next one for sure. I think it was a fluke...

Novak Ballistic 550 Brushless "Short Course" Motor (4.5T/5000Kv)
I have the older silver version of this motor and man does it kick ass in a 4x4 short course truck, tons of power and stays nice and cool. With both geared correctly in a Jammin SCRT10 my Castle 5700kv 540 motor hits temps over 160F near the end of a battery pack while my Novak 4.5 550 motor never gets above 110F. This is with a 2s battery. Do keep in mind the motor is quite a bit heavier then the 540 size so you might need to fiddle with your cars weight balance a bit.

Novak Ballistic 550 Brushless "Short Course" Motor (4.5T/5000Kv)
Got the motor and esc back from Novak about a week and a half after sending it in. They said one of the phases or something was bad. Anyway I haven't had any more problems at all with the novak 4.5 and havok pro combo-this combo has tons of torque and top speed is blazin' fast in a jammin scrt.
